Frequently Asked Questions about KidStage at StageCraft Studio
What are the benefits of enrolling my child in KidStage?
KidStage is like the "Little League" of theatre—a foundational program where kids gain life-long skills through fun and creative performance-based classes. Our students:
-
Develop self-confidence by performing in front of others
-
Improve communication skills through speaking and listening exercises
-
Learn teamwork and collaboration while rehearsing with classmates
-
Enhance reading and vocabulary through script memorization
-
Explore imagination and creativity in a safe, supportive space
Parents have reported increased reading scores, stronger conversational skills, and improved confidence in group settings after their child participated in KidStage.
How do KidStage auditions work?
Auditions are held on the first day of class and no preparation is required. Students will read selected scenes from the script with a small group. They’ll have time to practice with their group (about 10 minutes) before reading for the director.
For younger students or early readers, no need to worry—our director will guide them by reading the lines aloud for them to repeat. The goal is to make everyone feel comfortable and supported.
Why are auditions required?
Auditions help the director:
-
Understand your child’s comfort level on stage
-
Gauge their natural performance style
-
Assign a role that suits their abilities and helps them grow
Every student receives a role, whether or not they choose to audition. We also ask students to list their top three preferred roles, giving our director valuable insight for casting.
How can my child best learn their lines?
Memorization takes practice and support! Here are our best tips for learning lines at home:
-
Practice “loud and proud” every evening
-
Schedule short, consistent rehearsal times each week
-
Rehearse only the scenes your child is in
-
Read a few cue lines ahead of your child’s line to help them recognize speech patterns
-
Try writing lines down for extra memory support
-
Practice projecting from across the room to improve stage presence
With steady practice, memorizing lines can be fun and empowering.
Why is the “Off-Book” date important?
Being "off-book" means your child has fully memorized their lines—a key milestone in the KidStage process. Memorization:
-
Frees your child to focus on acting, not reading
-
Builds confidence during rehearsals and on performance night
-
Makes the entire experience more enjoyable and productive
Especially for younger students (grades K–3), reaching this milestone by the set date ensures they can fully engage in class activities.
Do I need to buy a costume for the show?
No costume purchase is required. We aim to keep KidStage affordable and accessible. We use a shared costume closet and keep the production simple. However, if you have items at home that could work for the show, we’d love for you to contribute!
What should we expect on show night?
Show night is all about celebrating your child’s progress and confidence. Here's what to expect:
-
Simple, heartfelt performances driven by the work the kids put in
-
A supportive environment where family and friends are encouraged to attend
-
No ticket fees for most productions—everyone is welcome!
